Laguna Torre and Cerro Torre, Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia

An enormous amount of mystery surrounds the peak of Cerro Torre.  It may have something to do with the ferocious winds that fly by the peak all day everyday, or that it's surrounded by clouds most days of the year, or the controversial first ascent claimed in 1959.  It also has an apparent climbing grade of VI 5.11 A1 WI6 Mushroom Ice 6.  With all this in mind, it's not surprising to hear the peak is summited by only a handful of people as opposed to the hundreds who attempt Everest each year.  Like a huge needle piercing the sky, the 3,128m granite spire intimidates everyone, even several kilometres away where I made this image.
